Well, it looks like my laptop is about ready to take the big dirtnap. Today I was trying to answer a request and my screen momentarily blacked out, and I got dumped from my network connection. Then the screen froze and I got a kernel error. I don't know much about computers, but all of that sounds like a Bad Sign. I'm glad I already backed up my essential MP3s to the desktop, but I hope I can get the other 15 gig off of there before it goes kerblooie. Balls. As if this week wasn't already crappy...

PS can anyone recommend a good IRC client for Windows?

Third vote for mIRC. It has never, EVER given me problems. If only I could find a Mac client that works as well as mIRC...

Sweet, thanks! Based on all of your advice I got mIRC. Seems OK so far. XChat Aqua is my preferred Mac client. It works pretty OK, I think.

I'll be a second vote for mIRC for Windows.

It sounds like it might just be a "Windows is starting to crap out on you" thing rather than a "my whole computer is fucked" thing -- dump your files to a storage drive, reinstall Windows, and you'll likely be back in business.

Yep, I'm going to see if I can scam a reinstall disk for OSX (the computer was used so I don't have any of the original stuff that came with it). As long as I can get my music offa there I'll be happy, even if it is dead it was free (a friend of mine gets a lot of free computer shit from his work) so I still came out ahead. Thanks!
