I finally got around to talking to my friend Cecily on the phone yesterday. I think it had been... shit, I don't even know. Months? She's over on the other side of the country now, but you know how it is with those good friends, you can always reconnect.
Cecily and I met when we were both working at this ice cream store in Jamaica Plain, MA. We kind of immediately pegged each other as troublemakers (haha pegging), and spent most of our time there finding ways to make work not feel like work. .
Immediately springing to memory...
Bringing disposable cameras to work and taking pictures of random shit - I still have a closeup of the back of one of my coworker's necks that I took for no goddamn reason - also we have complete documentation of a gigantic whipped cream fight.
Weird dressup themes - I remember we all wore weird dollar-store raver visors one night, and she put my hair in pigtails (I had a lot more hair back then, what with the metal and all \m/). That night I was really popular with a lot of our male customers for some reason.
General halfassery and fun-having, as only college kids who've found themselves in charge of a large retail operation can truly understand.
After work Cecily would host work-parties at her house, and whoever closed the store that night would come over to get baked and draw with markers, lie around and philosophize, and make fun of everything. Many times we would stay up til dawn, and on at least a few occasions we went back to the ice cream store (which doubled as a coffee shop in the morning) and ordered banana splits at 6:30AM. Goddamn the openers hated us. Suckers.
As much as some things about that time sucked (living with evil junky roommate, being dirt poor, living in state of perma-breakup), there are so many days of that time that I wouldn't trade for the world.
I'm glad I talked to you, Cecily. I really needed that.
